Joinery and turning Projects
In the spring of 2018, I took a Joinery and Turning class at my high school. The design prompt was very open, we could build anything we wanted as long as we practiced both joining and turning. I chose to focus on executing simple techniques to the best of my ability, and wanted to created something that would be functional, rather than just a showpiece. Following these criteria, I chose to build a tea tray and matching bowl that could be used as a set or as separate pieces. Both pieces are made from walnut and poplar, and are simply glued together. Since the design on the tray is complicated and eye catching, I chose to keep the joinery simple and use only miter joints. I did not want the joinery to distract from the poplar pattern, as I wanted the inlay to be the focal point of the piece. The bowl does not exactly match the tray, but the parallel lines compliment the cross hatch of the tray when paired together. I felt that a square pattern in the round bowl would not work as well, and as such chose to stick with a complimentary, but slightly different pattern in the bowl.
